My Story

Ashlea Sovetts is a multifaceted dance artist.

As an educator, she emphasises a somatic approach by incorporating her certified yoga teacher training. She values breath, fluidity, and awareness of one’s presence in relationship to others.

As a performer, Ashlea enjoys engaging in different creative processes. She has performed works by Jennifer Archibald, Stephanie Milling, Jennifer Salk, George Staib and Kathleen Wessel.

As a choreographer, Ashlea is inspired by political movements and real-life experiences.  She deconstructs these events to generate movement and non-linear narratives. Her work will be presented at the upcoming American College Dance Association Festival South-Central Region, the Ignite Conference (Women’s Political Leadership Conference), and during Staibdance’s Summer Intensive in Sorrento, Italy.

As an advocate, Ashlea educates individuals and political officials about why dance matters. Previously, she and colleague Reyna Mondragon presented, “How to Create an Advocacy Toolkit” at the National Dance Education Conference in San Antonio, TX to train individuals to become dance advocates.

As an administrator, Ashlea has experience coordinating performance and recruitment events, organizing budgets for an international dance intensive, and advising students. Ashlea worked as an assistant production coordinator in Philadelphia, PA, at Fringe Arts and at the Iron Factory. She is the Touring Manager for Staibdance’s summer intensive in Sorrento, Italy and the Recruitment Coordinator for the Department of Dance at Texas Woman’s University.

Ashlea, Originally from Myrtle Beach, SC graduated Cum Laude from Winthrop University and holds a Bachelors of Arts degree in Dance. Currently, she is a dance graduate assistant and MFA candidate at Texas Woman’s University in Denton, Texas.
